Photo Bristow, former Getaway editor and veteran travel book author, brought his best storytelling techniques to the fore about an ill-fated trip to Chobe Island off Tanzania. Neville, wearing porcupine quills to descibe his "humble Karroo roots", got the crowd chanting slogans for the ocean, while Nandipha, as media liaison for the Green Connection, helped to bring life to that wakeup call on behalf of Mother Earth and her oceans.ĪPPRECIATIVE CROWD: They cheered, hooted, stood up and clapped. Green Connection's Nandipha Masango and Neville van Rooy got our blood flowing and triggered the anti oil and gas activist in all of us. Michele MacFarlane spoke of her challenges as a blind parasurfer who has painted, sung on stage, won a judo event and has surfed for South Africa at the World Para-Surfing Championships in California last year. The evening was MC'ed by marine scientist Lauren de Vos who made the transition between speakers fluent and graceful, with a knack of getting to the nub that encapsulated speakers and their topics. Judging by the collective outpouring from the audience, they loved their work too! With much bad news in the world these days, it was refreshing and uplifting to see the incredible commitment to the ocean that people have in the course of their work. ![]()
